Power of Philanthropy

It Pays to Practice Generosity

As a fundraising professional, I have the privilege of seeing, firsthand, how charitable giving has a positive impact on individuals and communities. Additionally, numerous studies have highlighted the remarkable benefits of generosity to those who give.

“Hi, my name is Aaron, and I can be a selfish person.” I spent years battling the desire to acquire. I finally had an epiphany, or what addicts refer to as a moment of clarity, when I gave away an expensive gift I’d purchased for myself to a friend—just to brighten someone else’s day. I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t easy, but it was rewarding.

Science backs us up on this: Individuals who engage in acts of kindness experience heightened levels of happiness and satisfaction. This is attributed to the release of endorphins (dopamine and serotonin), often referred to as the “feel-good” hormones. Perhaps you’ve experienced the mood enhancing benefits of generosity, too. Giving feels good, and when you feel good, you’re more fun to be around. Generosity helps build positive relationships, fosters deeper connections and encourages a collaborative mindset where people work together toward shared goals and aspirations.

Furthermore, this altruistic behavior has been linked to improved health outcomes. In general, people who give on a consistent basis, through volunteering or donating, are happier and, therefore, have reduced levels of stress. One study, conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, found that individuals who regularly engaged in acts of generosity exhibited lower blood pressure, reduced inflammation and longer lifespans.

It seems it truly is better to give than to receive!

Incorporating acts of kindness into your routine doesn’t require grand gestures or significant resources. Whether it’s giving help to others, volunteering with a favorite organization, donating to a good cause or simply paying someone a compliment, it just might be the catalyst that inspires those around you to do the same.

Through the power of our philanthropy, we not only enrich the lives of others but also reap the rewards, personally, of a healthier and more fulfilling life.
